Pana Wady

Location:               Kyaiklat , Irrawaddy Delta area, near Yangon, Myanmar

Key dates:             Commenced March 2009;  Project work still ongoing

Local partners:      Management Committee of orphanage

Project background:  This is an impoverished, but well-run, girls’ orphanage in a fairly remote part of the Delta region.  The founder of the orphanage has long had a dream that some of her girls will be able to  develop good vocational skills and be able to enjoy independent careers outside the orphanage. We have been helping her achieve this ambition.

Main activities:   The Mandalay Projects is supporting the development of a tailoring workshop at the orphanage.  We have helped with the construction of a wholesale “shop front” alongside the workshop itself and have provided the necessary machinery and fabrics, plus ongoing training of the girls.

Status of project: Nearing completion.  The orphanage workshop has recently secured a number of contracts to provide tailoring services to schools in the area.  The existence of this Mandalay Projects facility has enabled the orphanage management to comply with recent government regulations on vocational skills training.
