Kani Orphanage

Location:               Kani, Irrawaddy Delta area, near Yangon, Myanmar

Key dates:             Commenced March 2010; Project work still ongoing

Local partners:      Management Committee of orphanage

Project background:  In consultation with the orphanage Management Committee, The Mandalay Projects has helped to establish a vocational training programme at the orphanage, focusing on the development of skills which the boys will be able to use in the local rural community.

Main activities:  The Mandalay Projects has arranged for the construction of a mechanical workshop, complete with a metal-working lathe, drills and other equipment, which has allowed the orphanage to become an important source of mechanical support for the surrounding rural agricultural community.

Status of project:  Ongoing.  The workshop is complete and the orphanage has secured a steady stream of work from farmers and businesses in the local community.  A number of the resident boys have now received training, and we have extended the apprenticeship programme to include trainees from the local village (ie non-residents of the orphanage itself)
