Deak Kum Pa

Location:               Luang Prabang, Laos PDR

Key dates:             Commenced April 2011;  First project completed November 2011.

Local partners:      Mr Andrew Brown and the Supervision Committee of Deal Kum Pa Orphanage

Project background:  The orphanage is home to over 500 children, ranging from around 7 to around 18 years of age.  Due to a lack of appropriate resources, the orphanage has not been able to cater for children younger than 7.  There are many children in that age group in the local community who may be at risk of exploitation, and for whom the orphanage could offer a safer and healthier environment.

Main activities:  We have provided assistance to the orphanage to develop an educational facility for this younger age group.  In addition to engaging local workers in construction of the facility, we have funded the services of a specialist teacher for the children.

Status of project:  Ongoing.  The facility has been completed, and we are engaged in on-going discussions with local management about what form our continued support might take.
