Ask most people if they believe there is slavery in the modern world we live in and at best you may get an answer along the lines that it exists in some remote corners of the world, more likely you will get confident statement to the effect that it ceased in the 1860's.
The frightening truth is that today, the Slave Trade, or Human Trafficking as it is now called (although human trafficking involves more than just slavery), is an illegal industry with a higher turnover than the illegal drug trade. Worse, the largest segment of this industry involves children and worse still, the largest segment of the child trafficking industry involves children for sale for sex.
This project has helped Abbess Molini build a safe house shelter in Kathmandu to save Nepalese girls from this repugnant trade. Molini is a Buddhist Abbess who comes from Myanmar. Having recently completed her studies, she has established herself in Nepal and plans to devote her life to intercepting the trade of young Nepalese girls who are in danger of being transported from the villages in the Himalayan mountains to the brothels of Mumbai.
While we have not yet had the chance to visit Molini, we are in regular contact with her and can report that the work on the shelter is progressing well. Thanks to the generosity of some Hong Kong friends, a contribution to this project has been put towards building the kitchen, laundry and other wet areas of the building.
